Magokichi Yamaoka, the founder of Yanmar, established the
Yamaoka Scholarship Foundation with his private fortune in 1950 just as Japan
was stepping out on the path of national reconstruction from the ashes of wartime
defeat.
Magokichi Yamaoka was born in a poor farming household in Shiga Prefecture and
overcame many hardships to found Yamaoka Engine Manufacturing Co., Ltd. (the present
Yanmar Co., Ltd.) and build it into a global engine maker. |

This was the motto of Magokichi Yamaoka. He knew that he
owed his success as an entrepreneur to the cooperation and assistance that he
had received from his many friends and acquaintances. He was grateful and wanted
to contribute to society himself. That was why he established a foundation that
had the objective of fostering people who would make a difference to the advancement
of global peace, prosperity and culture.
The foundation's present director, Tadao Yamaoka, has inherited the spirit of
Magokichi. The foundation has continued to replenish the bursary and expand its
scholarship operations. The foundation today awards and loans scholarships to
high-school and undergraduate students and awards scholarships to graduate students
engaged in scientific research and foreign graduate students studying in Japan.
About 5,000 people have already benefited from these scholarships and moved on
to perform core roles in many fields. Their contributions to society are now intangible
assets of the Yamaoka Scholarship Foundation. |
