Isuzu Motors and Yanmar
to Share Industrial Diesel Engines
July 4 (Tokyo)- Isuzu Motors Limited and Yanmar Co., Ltd. (Yanmar) have reached an agreement to start cross product supply of each others' industrial diesel engines beginning in 2002, with a specific aim of strengthening the diesel engine businesses at both companies.
While such details as to the time schedule for actual product sharing are still to be ironed out, Isuzu and Yanmar will begin supplying certain engine models from 2002, gradually expanding the scope of sharing to include various engine models. A joint project team, mainly made up of engineers from both companies, will study selection of engine models to be shared.
At present, Isuzu and Yanmar have their own industrial diesel engine operations of their own, both serving the market with a full line-up. Combined total sales volume between Isuzu and Yanmar this year will be 470,000 units. When it comes to core strengths, Isuzu has undisputed strength in heavy-duty industrial engines over 4-liter displacement, while Yanmar has distinct strength in smaller engines with less than 4-liter displacement.
In recent years, industry sales have been flattening out. Against this backdrop, Isuzu and Yanmar decided to collaborate on the product front, specializing in the core strength of each other, thereby improving profit base. Accordingly, Isuzu will supply 4- to 5-liter engines to Yanmar, and Yanmar will supply its 0.5- to 3-liter engines to Isuzu.
With the agreement this time, Isuzu and Yanmar will be able to zero in on their own strengths and further improvement of competitive edge, while ensuring clear differentiation of product. Isuzu and Yanmar products will be distributed through their existing sales channel.
