| Hokule'a (the Star of Happiness) sets sail from Hawaii
on Jan. 6, 2007 and sails to Majuro, Ponape, Truk, Satawal, Yap, Palau
and to Japan. The total sailing distance will reach 7,140 miles (ll,500km).
The relation between Japan and Hawaii dates back to the days of Kingdom of Hawaii, when considerable number of Japanese immigrants crossed the sea to Hawaii. Many Polynesians, too, migrated to Hawaii from old times. Hokule'a is a canoe sail boat based on the old canoes used by those immigrants to Hawaii. Hokule'a, without employing any modern sailing devices including marine charts, compass, etc., is planned to sail only using the knowledge of stars, clouds and the sun. In view of the likelihood of encountering adverse winds and storms, Hokule'a will be accompanies by an escort boat called Kamahele. The main engine of Kamahele, selected by the master seafarers, is a highly reliable Yanmar marine engine. |
